Herdsman of the Year is a title given to recognize an outstanding individual who has displayed exceptional skills and dedication to the livestock industry. This title is an honor that displays hard work, passion, and integrity, and this individual set the standard for this year’s consideration. It’s more than just recognition; it’s a tribute to their passion and expertise in nurturing life in the barn, where every day is a testament to their commitment to excellence. Sullivan Supply is proud to congratulate the Best of the Barns – Herdsman of the Year, Matt Scasta.
Matt Scasta grew up in Bryan, Texas, immersed in the daily operations of a thriving commercial cow-calf operation. Discovering his passion for showing livestock at a young age, Matt’s journey was shaped significantly by his mentor, Billy Rash, who imparted invaluable lessons during his formative years. In 1997, Matt found himself in Madill, initially to assist with a sale at Buck Cattle Company. Captivated by the industry’s dynamic spirit, he decided to make it his permanent home. Throughout his career, Matt has been privileged to share his expertise and support fellow enthusiasts, forming enduring bonds with remarkable individuals such as Jirl, Brenda, and Bailey, who have become cherished members of his extended family.
As the Best of the Barns – Herdsman of the Year, Matt was nominated by his peers for his continuous work he has contributed to this industry and junior exhibitors. When asked how Matt felt knowing he had been nominated and voted upon by his peers, he replied, “Very honored. There are so many people that I look up to both young and old. Anytime someone is recognized. That means people are watching. It takes a good crew and I’ve been very fortunate to work for an operation that not only tries to go to the next level every year, but associated with a great crew that works together and puts everything together in line.”
Matt has been a significant key to Buck Cattle Company and the livestock industry. With many hours and days dedicated to ensuring the quality of cattle both at home and at shows, his impact he makes on the next generation is impeccable. As an industry leader, we ask Matt what advice he has for someone who wants to produce national champions, and he states, ” Work hard, always watch and learn something from the people that are on top or that you look up to, never be afraid to ask a question, always have a goal. There is always a way to make yourself better within that goal.”
