What You Need To Know: Show Day Time Management – Goat | Tips from Stock Show University®

One of the biggest keys to success on show day is learning how to properly manage your time before entering the ring. At larger livestock shows, a good rule of thumb is to account for approximately one minute per head in the show order. To estimate your show time, count the number of animals ahead of you and multiply that number by one minute. For example, if your animal is the 65th head in the class rotation, you can estimate that it will take around 65 minutes from the start of the show until you enter the ring. If the show begins at 8:00 a.m., it is safe to assume you will likely show around 9:05–9:15 a.m., depending on how quickly the classes move. This simple method helps exhibitors stay organized, avoid rushing, and better prepare themselves and their livestock for competition.

Once you determine your estimated ring time, work backward to create your fitting schedule. A Stock Show University® recommendation is to allow yourself at least one full hour before show time to properly prepare your clean, dry animal for the ring. Depending on how many people are helping fit, you may need even more time. Using the previous example, if you expect to show around 9:05–9:15 a.m., your animal should ideally be on the fitting stand around 8:00–8:15 a.m. Keep in mind that smaller jackpot shows or goat divisions can move much faster than expected, especially with efficient judges, so it is important to stay alert and continue monitoring the pace of the show throughout the day. Preparation and time management are essential skills that help reduce stress and allow exhibitors to perform at their best when it matters most.
