How many years have you helped with the North American Junior Red Angus Event?

Dan and I started talking about this with other breeders about 12 years ago.

Why do you continue to support the NAJRAE?

This year there will be over 200 reasons why a person should support it. These 200 junior exhibitors are the future of beef production. According to the 2012 USDA Census, the average beef producer’s age is 58.3. We have to do something to keep these young people involved in the production of beef, and by providing a week of fun competitions, leadership building activities, and shows, I believe we are doing just that. This week isn’t just about inspiring and educating the youth of our organization, it is also a week that parents can spend time focused on their children helping them with sales talk, public speaking, and refreshing their memories on quiz bowl questions and other information about the breed.

What do you enjoy most about the Red Angus Breed?

There are so many reasons to enjoy this breed. Through NAJRAE we have met some of the greatest people and have had so many great experiences. As far as the actual breed, what got our family excited was the Red Angus female and her mothering ability, as well as the docility of the breed as a whole.

Why do you think the Red Angus breed has gained popularity in recent years?

I think up until recently, the Red Angus breed has been highly underrated. I believe the popularity of this breed has started to grow because people are realizing the full potential of the breed. I think the mothering ability of it’s females, the high quality beef production the breed produces, and the docility of the breed as a whole, are all contributing factors as toward why this breed is constantly growing.

What is your favorite thing about the North American Junior Red Angus Event?

We can think outside the box, we can raise the bar, and we can change. We work very hard to do what is best for the juniors and for the future of the Red Angus breed. Working with the Junior Board is also a great experience. I just can’t say enough about them. They plan throughout the year for this event. They show up before everyone else, and they are the last ones to leave. They compete, they lead, and they never stop giving. We could not be prouder. This Senior Board is one of the most unselfish volunteer groups I have had the privilege of working with. I encourage people to get involved. It’s like watching a cattle show, it is easy to stand outside the ring and be able to place the cattle (most of the time you may not agree) but step inside that ring, and it is a game changer. In other words, it’s a lot harder than it looks. Outside of the ring the junior and senior boards make it look easy, but there are many discussions had about doing the right things for the betterment of the NAJRAE, and a year of planning that happen before the event takes place to make it the best we can.

This is an independent show, and the entire week is completely put on by volunteers, breeders, and corporate support.

HealthRegulations
