Dr. Larry Wilson has been a staple in and around the showring at the Illinois State Fair for nearly five decades. This year, we celebrate his hard work and dedication to the livestock community as he retires from his positions with ILSF as the Assistant Livestock Superintendent and the Junior Beef Cattle Superintendent.
After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1979, Dr. Wilson started his career as an Assistant Agriculture Extension Adviser in Coles County, which led to a long involvement with the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the State Fair. Originally recruited to be the Assistant Swine Superintendent, he later served as Assistant Junior Beef Superintendent. In 2005, he became Superintendent of the Junior Beef Show, here he worked on policies, show expansion, and increasing participation; including new breed classes and upgraded show grounds.
Retiring from Illinois Extension in 2010, Dr. Wilson was invited to join the Junior Dairy Show staff and serve as Assistant Livestock Superintendent. In 2016, these roles expanded to the DuQuoin State Fair, where he have served for over a decade. Over 46 years, Larry Wilson has had the privilege of working with passionate people, including show teams, exhibitors, and staff, who inspire me daily.
Dr. Larry Wilson has also dedicated over 45 years to youth livestock development, volunteering countless hours with events like the North American Collegiate Judging Contest, which he has supervised since 2000. His commitment has impacted thousands of young people, and he continues to serve with enthusiasm and dedication. Larry’s contributions to agriculture, youth programs, and international sports organizations exemplify his lifelong passion for service and community.
We will certainly miss having Dr. Larry in the ring with us during Illinois State Fair. Although we have a feeling this isn’t farewell, we fully expect to see him ringside next year enjoying the product of all his hardwork through the years.
