The SCO Jr. Spotlight today was nominated by Line Show Cattle (IL)! Their sale is today on SCO, you can check it out here: https://sconlinesales.com/Bids/AuctionsListing/31267

We are excited bout their nomination and welcome you to read about Nathan Spangler – a young man from Illinois with some fun memories.

SCO: What is one moment in the ring that you will never forget?
NATHAN: Winning the Simmental show at the 2022 Illinois State Fair Open Steer Show because my dad and I had talked about trying to win the show but didn’t think we’d ever actually be able to.

SCO: What do you consider your biggest accomplishment as a showman?

NATHAN: When I won Showmanship for my age group at the 2018 Illinois State Fair. It was a lot of fun because one of our farm employees made a bet with me that if I won, he’d get an Illini tattoo – and he’s a Michigan fan. Now he’s got Chief Illiniwek on his leg forever!

SCO: Outside of showing what do you enjoy doing?
NATHAN: Outside of showing, I enjoy working on our farm, participating in FFA and riding 4-wheelers. I also really like woodworking and I’ve started a business making custom cornhole boards.

SCO: What are your long-term life goals?
NATHAN: I want to come back to the farm after college, expand the farm, and improve the genetics of our cattle herd.

SCO: Who has been the biggest influence in your show career?
NATHAN: Definitely my dad because he helped me get started showing. He has taught me a lot of what I know, and he’s always pushed me to be better and work harder.

SCO: What is the one barn chore you hate doing?
NATHAN: I absolutely hate dyeing calves. The dye gets everywhere and it’s hard to get off.

SCO: What is your favorite show to go to and why?
NATHAN: One of my favorite shows has always been our county fair. I like it because I can hang out with friends, and I’m able to teach and help younger showmen.

SCO: If you could show another species, aside from cattle, what would you pick?
NATHAN: I would pick pigs. I’ve heard that they’re pretty fun to show so I think they would be cool to try out.

SCO: What is one thing people would never guess about you?
NATHAN: I am the lead trumpet player in our school band.

SCO: If you could donate $100,000 to any charity, what would it be and why?
NATHAN: I would donate it to Farm Rescue. It’s a great cause that helps organize field work for a farm family in crisis.

SCO: If you could have dinner with one person from history who would it be and why?
NATHAN: I would have dinner with John Deere. He started a company with a simple invention that changed agriculture in the Midwest, the steel plow. Since then, the company has revolutionized the agriculture industry and John Deere’s impact has and will continue to impact generations of agriculturalists.

Keep up the good work, Nathan! The SCO Family is cheering you on.
