As Junior Nationals unfold and the barns buzz with excitement, there’s no better time to look back on the path taken by past Shorthorn Junior Board members—and no better moment to challenge yourself to take that same leap. James Sullivan and Luke Bolin, both now leaders at Sullivan Supply, credit their time in the red jacket as a launching pad for the careers and lives they lead today. From the show ring to behind-the-scenes planning, both emphasized how board service shaped their leadership, decision-making, and lifelong connections. “It taught me to think critically and stay calm under pressure,” said Sullivan, while Bolin added, “It helped write the story of who I am today.”

James Sullivan is the second from the left in the back row. Luke Bolin is second from the right in the back row.
Running for the junior board isn’t just about titles—it’s about growth. It’s about stepping outside your comfort zone, forming friendships across state lines, and learning to work as a team. Luke shared how, as a small-town kid from Arkansas, he was told it couldn’t be done. “But I didn’t listen,” he said. “I put in the work and chased that red jacket with everything in me.” His story, along with James’s behind-the-scenes experience at Junior Nationals, serves as a reminder: the board is where passion meets purpose.
So to every junior headed to this year’s Junior Nationals—good luck! Whether it’s your first time attending or you’re aging out, make the most of every handshake, every challenge, and every opportunity. And if you’re thinking about running for the junior board? Do it. Be bold. Commit fully. As James put it best: “Don’t just show up—give it everything you’ve got.
