Proposed Plans for the New SD State Fair Livestock Complex

Update from the South Dakota State Fair:

“On October 31, 2020, a fire destroyed the State Fair Beef Complex. It was a terrible loss that caught us all off guard and left us with an uncertain future. It was a sad day at the state fairgrounds. For nearly 135 years, the State Fair has been an important part of South Dakota’s culture. Built in the 1970s, the Beef Complex has hosted hundreds of livestock and equestrian events and has been a major economic engine for the fairgrounds. It’s also held many memories for South Dakotans and anyone who attended an event there. It truly was a special place.

Out of adversity comes new opportunity and a chance to build for the future! This is the time to make needed improvements to the fair’s livestock showing and equestrian event capabilities. Today, we start writing the next chapter.
We are thrilled to share with you our plan to build a new livestock complex to meet all the fair’s needs and attract regional and national events. Although we are still in the preliminary stages, we have an aggressive timeline for construction and fundraising.

– Our goal is to break ground in 2021 and have the new facility up and running for the 2022 State Fair.
– Project funding will come from a combination of proposed one-time funds, insurance claims from the fire, and a fundraising effort.

We are very grateful for Governor Kristi Noem’s support of the project. If you are a fan of the fair, please ask your legislators to support the funding package.
We are very excited about this opportunity and hope you are too. If you would like to learn more, please go to https://tinyurl.com/y2cykq4n.”
