A show stick is one of the essential items that needs to be with you when entering the show ring with your calf. Having said that, a frequently asked question by many Sullivan Supply customers is, “What size of show stick is for me?” During this Tips from Stock Show University® article, we will be explaining “sizing” of show sticks for exhibitors of any age and height!
The number one rule when selecting a show stick on length is – Choose a show stick that fits the animal you are exhibiting, versus the size or age of the exhibitor. What this means is that you need to go into the show ring with a show stick that allows you to comfortably move the back feet of your animal or touch their tail. For example – Let’s say you are a younger showman that is showing a large, bred heifer. More than likely, a smaller show stick in this situation would be a disadvantage to the showman, as they might have a harder time reaching those hind legs to correctly set up their animal. In this situation, Stock Show University® would recommend using a medium to large show stick. The older or more experienced you become within the show ring, it is recommended to upgrade to the Large or Extra Large show stick. Note – this is just a recommendation, as the show stick should never be a distraction in the show ring. If a larger show stick does become a distraction or is hard to manage while showing, you should size down your show stick.
Along with this advice, it is suggested that you practice at least 20 minutes with your animal each day for at least 45–60 days before your target show with the selected show stick length. This is so the exhibitor, along with the calf, can get accustomed to the show stick.
Keep your animal calm and focused without the risk of becoming groggy. The blend of natural ingredients in Focus are completely safe for all animals. Provides a calming effect and takes the “edge” off unruly animals during stressful times such as shows.
