Inside the Showbox with Payton Hines

Payton Hines is a 19-year-old hog showman from Quincy, Michigan. Currently a sophomore at Lake Land College. Check out alittle bit about what is inside her showbox below!!

What’s your favorite show?
My favorite show has to be either the Eastern Regional in New York which is an NJSA sanctioned show or the American Royal. I have always enjoyed the Royal because my grandparents are very close and they would always be able to come watch. Also, the cookies that used to be at the American Royal were to die for!

What is your favorite thing to do in the barn?
I spend most of my time in the barn and my favorite job would be feeding. I get to be a master chef for my pigs and they are always so grateful to see me.

What is your least favorite thing to do in the barn?
My least favorite thing to do in the barn is clean up after my dad and sister, cause boy can they make a mess.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s in your show box at a show?
Haha, has to be band-aids, because I am so accident prone that they are a requirement for all shows.

What breed do you show?
Hampshires, because who doesn’t love the problem child.

Why do you like showing this breed?
My grandfather, Bob Hines, had many Hampshire sows when I was growing up. We would always drive out to Kansas for the sale and to see my grandparents. We always had a few Hampshire sows growing up, but when my grandpa went out of the business years ago, we took in more Hampshire sows and the love for the belted breed grew.

What are some of your favorite Sullivan Supply products to use on your animals?
You can’t make any hog look good without Sullivan’s Revive or Sudden Impact. Makes the dark on the Hampshires look shiny and glossy which helps when you have minimal days to sun because you live in Michigan.

What’s your showbox staple item?
I would say the Hines Family showbox staple item for the pigs has to be Lindner Shuffle, that product can work magic. On the other hand, for the family, it has to be aspirin because we all drive each other crazy.

Tell us about your favorite show animal.
My favorite show animal had to be my crossbred barrow from last year, Show Pony. He was the sweetest boy and was only beat twice. He had the most stamina of any hog that I have ever shown and his love for marshmallows was uncanny. He would always greet me to be fed in both the morning and evening with the loudest squeal. But most importantly I can never forget the belly rubs, he would always stop dead in his tracks during his walk if you started to scratch his belly.

What is your favorite part about showing?
My favorite part about showing are the friends that I get to meet, the knowledge that I have gained and the obstacles that I have been able to overcome. I would not know all of the people that I do today had I not shown livestock. With the years I have spent showing livestock I have gained more knowledge, not just about swine but the livestock industry as a whole. By raising and exhibiting livestock I have learned to overcome obstacles such as being able to think of my feet when a sow is having trouble farrowing or a Yorkshire gilt has the clip off the clip feeder stuck in her cheek (yes, it has happened before).
