Burns Farms Herdsman (Pikeville, TN) – Job Description

Position: Hereford cattle herdsman

Requirements:

  • High School diploma (BS degree in Animal Science preferred)
  • Show cattle management experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Basic equipment skills including: tractors, skid loaders, dump trucks, trucks with trailers, ATVs, balers, rakes, tedders, manure spreaders.
  • Basic computer skills including: database, spreadsheet, and word processing.
  • Available to work off hours, weekends, and holidays in rotation with other employees as is typically required with cattle operations.

Detailed Description:

  • Manage show and sale cattle
    • Feeding and daily care of show cattle
    • Must be able to clip, fit and break cattle
    • Show barn upkeep including cleaning and organization
    • Ability to manage a show crew at National shows
  • Assist with the daily management of the Hereford cow herd
    • Feeding – Routine feeding of grain, forages, and supplements.
    • Calving – routine observation and assistance, calf processing, related records
    • Breeding – heat detection, A.I., donor preparation, recipient preparation, related records
    • Herd Health – Perform routine herd health procedures including vaccinations, deworming, fly control, tagging, and tattooing.  Diagnose and treat routine health problems such as pink eye, foot rot, scours, respiratory problems, minor injuries, and lameness.  Keep all related health records.
    • Data collection – collect various weights, measurements, and samples related to cattle evaluation.
  • Assist with marketing – prepare cattle for photographs, sales, and exhibitions.  Interact with customers and potential customers. Deliver animals to sales and customers.
  • Coordinate activities with other full time employees.
  • This is a dynamic position that will evolve over time to meet the needs of a growing company based on the interests and skills of the successful applicant.

Organization: Will report to David Burns, Farm Manager

Compensation: Annual salary of $28,000 – $35,000: depending on education and experience, housing, health/dental/vision insurance, and cell phone.

Starting Date: January 1, 2015 +/- depending on availability of successful applicant.
