Best of the Barns Hog Showman of the Year – Ava Lynn Cravey

Ava Lynn Cravey’s 2024 show season was nothing short of extraordinary—and to her, it was simply “blessed.” With titles like Grand Champion Barrow, Grand Champion Gilt, and Master FFA Showman at the Georgia Junior National Livestock Show and Rodeo, the year was a culmination of years of dedication. “All the hard work and long hours we spent in the barn as a family paid off,” she said. “No matter what the rest of the year held, we were blessed to have earned those titles.” The moment was more than a win—it was a reward for perseverance and passion, shared with the people who matter most.

Ava Lynn’s roots in the livestock industry run deep. She entered the ring at just two years old and hasn’t looked back since. “This industry has brought me extended family, some of my best friends, and more life lessons than I can count,” she said. That lifelong connection is reinforced daily, not just in the show barn, but on her family’s hog farm. With over 50 sows to care for, Ava Lynn works side by side with her dad through every step—from daily feedings, AI, farrowing and sale prep. It’s more than chores; it’s a lifestyle built on consistency, care, and shared goals.

To Ava Lynn, showmanship is the heart of it all. “It’s about presenting your animal at its highest level,” she explained. That level of success starts long before show day, in the quiet discipline of early mornings and routine tasks. “Success doesn’t happen overnight,” she added. “The little things matter—feeding, exercising, and maintaining a clean and healthy environment.” This mindset paid off at her most memorable show: the 2024 Georgia Junior Nationals, where she showed both the gilt and barrow champions. Her barrow, “Zazu,” held special meaning, as he was home-raised from start to finish.

But show success isn’t just about ribbons—it’s about the animals who leave a mark. One of her most unforgettable show pigs, “Creed,” earned numerous banners and was named Reserve Champion Market Barrow at the 2025 Georgia Junior Nationals. “He had a huge personality and loved being in the ring,” she said. These connections reflect Ava Lynn’s deep bond with her animals, making the journey just as rewarding as the destination. Whether it’s in the barn, at a show, or watching new pigs arrive, her passion never wavers.

As she enters her junior year, Ava Lynn is more motivated than ever to make the most of her remaining time in the ring. “Each new pig gets me excited all over again,” she said. With around 40 litters expected this July, the rhythm of the farm continues to drive her forward. Her advice to others is simple but powerful: “Make the best with what you have, and keep working hard—even through setbacks.” Inspired by her mom’s strength and encouragement, Ava Lynn has learned that grit and gratitude can carry you through the toughest days.

Congratulations to Ava Lynn Cravey, the 2024 Best Hog Showman—a young woman whose love for the industry, fierce work ethic, and humble heart set her apart. As she chases down new goals and gives her all to every project, she’s not just shaping animals—she’s shaping a legacy. And if her journey so far is any indication, the best is yet to come.
