Sometimes picking a show stick can feel a little bit like Goldilocks and the Three Bears: one size seems too small, maybe one seems too long, but which one is just right?
Whether at home or show-ring ready, a show stick is an essential tool needed for various purposes. Whether you’re working cattle at home or walking into the ring, a properly sized show stick is an essential tool. It allows you to calmly and confidently set up your animal, cue them into position and keep them relaxed. But not just any stick will do.
The primary factor to consider when selecting a show stick is length. Always choose a show stick that fits the animal being exhibited, not the size of the exhibitor. The stick should comfortably reach the animal’s hind feet or tailhead without the exhibitor having to overextend or reposition. This makes setting feet smoother and presentation more fluid.
Standard Show Stick Lengths
Show sticks typically come in four sizes:
48″ – Small
54″ – Medium
60″ – Large
68″ – Extra-Large
If you’re stuck choosing between two sizes, it’s recommended to size up, especially when showing a larger animal. A longer stick gives you more reach, which is crucial for adjusting rear feet without excessive movement.
For example, if a younger exhibitor is showing a bred heifer, a shorter stick might limit their ability to adjust the animal correctly. In that case, a 60″ or even 68″ stick can give them the reach they need to stay in position and keep control.
That said, comfort and control matter most. If a longer stick becomes difficult to manage, don’t be afraid to size down. It’s better to use a stick you can manage than one that becomes a distraction in the ring.
Your show stick should feel like an extension of your arm, therefore once you’ve selected your ideal show stick length, the next step is to practice! For the best results, work with your animal for 20 minutes per day, starting 45–60 days before your target show. This builds confidence and familiarity for both the exhibitor and the calf.
