5 Beginner Showman Tips from Sullivan Supply and MHBA

Showing livestock is about much more than walking into the ring and hoping for the best. Every successful showman starts somewhere, and the lessons learned early on often become the foundation for future success. From choosing the right products and developing daily routines to building relationships and setting goals, there are many pieces that contribute to becoming a confident exhibitor. While every exhibitor’s journey looks different, these tips offer valuable advice for anyone just getting started in the show ring.

Tip #1: Trial and Error: Figure out what works best for you. You might like some products better than others or some products work differently on each animal depending on their skin, hair or attitude. No two animals are the exact same. – Sam Schmitt

Tip #2 Do your homework at home: Take the time to work your animal like it’s in the show ring. All the work you do at home with showmanship matters at the show. Get familiar with your animal so they can trust you when you leave home and take them to a new environment.  Have someone watch you and give pointers on how you can be more efficient to get the final result. –  Darren Osbment

Tip #3 Work with good breeders that want you to be successful: They want to find as much success as you do in the show ring. Each connection you make can help you later on down the future for school, a job, or a time of need. – Luke Arnold

Tip #4  Have fun! Don’t get so caught up in the wins and losses. Make memories, find new friends and catch up with old ones you haven’t seen in awhile. The show industry wants to see you succeed in all aspects of life. Make sure you have a good support system whether it’s your family, agricultural education teacher, extension agent or even a neighbor down the road. – Brandon Kuykendall & Sterling Rollins

Tip #5 Set short term & long term goals : Some goals could be making the cut, getting first place in class, or winning a national show. The short term goals will make the long term goals that much sweeter. Share your goals with your support system around you to help reach those goals. You can’t get to the top without help along the way. “Don’t wish for it, work for it” – Audra Boyer

As you continue your showing journey, remember that success isn’t measured solely by banners and buckles. The skills, work ethic, friendships, and memories you gain along the way are what truly make the experience worthwhile. Stay committed to learning, trust the process, and don’t be afraid to ask questions from those around you. Whether you’re preparing for your first county fair or chasing a junior national banner, every champion was once a beginner. Keep working hard, enjoy the ride, and make the most of every opportunity provided.
